Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with a jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. However you can only swap out the jewels in an item level upgrade of equipment once.

It is normal to use more jewelry to enhance the appearance of. The jewels can also enhance performance and make a surface harder than metal so that repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.

Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be used in any kind of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that are active when the hero is not fighting. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also make up for the lack of a strong slots in the team or talent tree which are usually filled by the hero's optimal stats.
