Buying a Convertible Single to Double Stroller

The news that you are expecting your second child is among the most exciting things you can hear. But the process of preparing your family for the arrival of this new baby is not without its own set of challenges.

One of these is selecting the right double pram for your requirements. This article will cover what options are available along with some suggestions to help you select the right pram for your growing family.

Convertible double prams

A convertible single-to-double stroller is a great choice for those who want a stroller that can grow with your family. These innovative frames such as the Cybex Aton 4 pushchair twin expand widthways to accommodate a second seat. They also have the option of incorporating a shopping basket, or two carrycots/carseats (with upper and lower adapters). This lets you to begin your family with just a single buggy and then upgrade when you have twins. These double prams offer more seating and configuration options for both children compared to other styles. They also have a more evenly distributed weight which makes them easier to maneuver. They are compact, easy to use and adaptable. Cons: Less storage space and less space for both children compared to some other designs.

Tandem (in-line) double prams

As the name suggests tandem prams have two seats or bassinets that face each other. Tandem prams are generally narrower than double prams that are side-by-side. They are also more maneuverable through doorways and in public transport. They don't have much storage space and can be difficult to reach when both seats are in use particularly when your child is in the front seat.

Some parents who are first-time parents choose tandem strollers to protect their investment should they have children with the same age. Our DUO2 pram is a popular model. It's designed as a single buggy however, it can be transformed to a twin stroller simply by adding a second seat. It also converts back to a single pram when your older child is no longer able to use it.

Tandem prams are available in many configurations. For example an infant can be placed in a bassinet at the top of the pram, while an older child sits on the seat below. Most can also be converted into a travel system with the addition of the pushchairs car seats capsule, which is positioned in the top of the seat.

A side-by-side double stroller allows both children to share a ride and talk as they go. This will help prevent the two from fighting or getting up.

A side-byside is also the perfect choice for grandparents who want to join in the fun - they can carry both children around and help out with shopping, running errands or attending events. They are usually cheaper than a tandem pram, so they can be ideal for introducing grandchildren to babysitting.

Single prams

A single pram can only allow for 1 seat or bassinet/carry-cot. It is usually suitable from birth through to approx. 4 years old. A lot of single prams allow toddler boards (depending on which type of toddler board you pick) to be tacked to the back so that another child can stand or sit, while you push the stroller.

Some first-time parents choose to ensure their pram is future-proofed by purchasing a double Pram Double option, like our DUO2. This means you'll use the pram in single mode while you have one child, and then switch it into a tandem double pram once bub number two arrives. This will save you the hassle and cost of buying a separate double stroller.

In-line or tandem double prams might be a bit larger than side-by-side double prams however, they are still much easier to manoeuvre on busy footpaths and inside shops. However, they are more difficult to use while running, and require more effort to push when going up or down hills.

Side by side prams are much wider than in-line or tandem double prams. They are a good choice for families with 2 children close in age - the children will be able to view and interact with each other from their seats. However, they are less mobile and might not be able to fit through doorways that are standard as a tandem stroller.

Non-convertible side-by-side prams cannot be used in single mode. You'll have to purchase a different triple pram or stroller for your children's younger ones. However, they have the advantage of being a cheaper option and will last for longer than double prams that convert, because they aren't built to be used in both single and double modes. The main downside is that your older child will quickly outgrow the side-byside seats and will have to be transferred to a toddler's seat which can be expensive.
