World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
The upgrade of an item can be used to improve the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can increase the rarity of an item level upgrade or mark Level and boost additional stats.
Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.
Item Level
The value of an item upgrader mod's stats base increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all its leveled up benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive dependent on the upgrader and what type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is due to the number of perks that need to be altered to upgrade an item.
The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips of items. It can also be used to limit how much PvP gear players are able to wear since PvP is not available at lower levels. The average level of an item is listed on the character sheet.
Using the item level can help players evaluate the potency of gear when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a good indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it's capable of causing. The level of an item can be used to compare items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.
The item level can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its ilvl. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are several theories about how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that various perks have different value, and also that sockets have gems that increase the value of the item overall. This could result in a calculated item's ilvl that is often very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.
However, this is not the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, because the level of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding an additional level to its haste rating or crit rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
Item stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's level.
Item upgrades add to that by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.
Another method of altering the stats of an item is through affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can be used to give the item extra damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding a special name to the item.
All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items that can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling.
Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each item will include at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an exclusive item, or an item that has a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
This is another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or deciding which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats gained or lost at once.
Item Luck
A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the strength of the properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players a chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves and is thus more valuable in the early game than later ones because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the Luck of an item, up to 140.
Furthermore some items, such as the Hollow infused weapon can be outfitted to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be purchased from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.
The performance of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of the item level upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5%.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects can be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the item upgrader - his explanation - CORE client config.
