How to Replace an audi car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and audi key fob replacement Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector Audi a3 key replacement holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.
Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly in the case of the Bosch unit which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues with your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the replacement audi a4 key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This part is common across the replacement audi key fob 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find good ones in wrecking yards.
