Frame made of sturdy material
Figures have just been released showing that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sense is on the verge of disappearing. They've been replaced with four-wheelers which can handle a wider variety of terrain, while still looking elegant and easy to push.
The general rule is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn and a 3 year old and found that it was able to handle cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it is solid to push and is very stable when going over difficult terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped up regularly and have a suspension built-in. It was extremely comfortable for my children.
The shape and size of the seat is a further factor to consider. You want the seat to be large enough to allow your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies have a full lie-flat option while others will only allow the parent to be facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and muddy walks. It can be used as a one-person unit from birth and then adapts to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers from age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness and a spacious cushioned seat unit. The storage options are great too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets in the hood, and an attractive pouch at the back of the seat unit.
Wheels with larger diameter
Larger wheels mean your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - perfect for buggies that are off-road. They also help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Some three wheeler pushchair-wheeled buggies come with wheels that swivel on the front to aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock for increased speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you bump against a tree or a kerb. The front wheel will lift slightly to keep it from hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheeled pushchairs come with air-filled tyres which allow them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures so you'll need to have a repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo lux are among our favorite 3 wheel pushchair with car seat-wheelers. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly go up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which according to her "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".
The drawback of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite broad and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This can be an issue when you're using it for an exercise bike or to be able to get through doors that are narrow when out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to make compact storage.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeled buggy is more comfortable to drive with children. They are designed so that the front wheels rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 wheeler strollers-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and said: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground, with the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also impressed by the way it handled bumps, particularly when using the brake operated by hand. I found it extremely steady when I was driving downhill or over uneven terrain."
The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel twin stroller wheel stroller with infant car seat (Read Alot more) wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when your home is a city. If this is a concern then a 4-wheeler might be a better choice for you.
