In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace audi key the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. When this sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also to timigrate. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
