3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is ideal for off-roading and provides the most comfortable ride for your child. They can also be easier to maneuver and push than a four-wheel buggy, especially if they have fabric sling seats or seat units that are placed comfortably in the frame, offering the best ergonomics and weight distribution.
Stability
A three-wheeler has great stability, which is the reason it's an ideal option for off-road walks (especially with an all terrain or off-road style seat unit). They often feature oversized front wheels, which cope well with kerbs and bumps as well as rough ground. Some models have a lockable wheel in the front to give you additional stability when driving on uneven terrain.
It is important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels and this can mean that they fall over more easily. However, the most reliable 3 wheel stroller with seat-wheel pushchairs have perfect geometry and engineering to make them very stable in all conditions. They should be able of turning at a whim, be easy to steer with just one hand, and feature the front wheel rotate 360o which makes them perfect for maneuvering and navigating difficult terrain.
Look for models that have pneumatic tyres. These are designed to handle nonpaved tracks, and are able to withstand mud, gravel, rocks and more. A lot of all-terrain buggies have an swivelling wheel at the front that can be locked for extra stability when you're dealing with rough terrain.
A 3-wheeler is a good option for runners or those who like to walk quickly and uphill, particularly when you plan to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that can recline flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable for babies and can be used with the use of a car seat or carrycot. It also allows for a bit of light jogging but isn't intended for serious runners.
Weight
If you're seeking a buggy that will take on tricky terrain then you want one with large wheels. These will cope well over cobbles, grass and dirt tracks and provide the smoothest ride for all passengers. They are also ideal for jogging as they have built-in suspension and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. The trade-off is that they're a bit heavy to push.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy you can use on rough terrain (pictured above). The 3 wheel all terrain pushchair-wheel buggy comes with 16 rear wheels and an swivel wheel lockable to the front making it extremely maneuverable. It has tyres with air that need to be pumped up from time to time. It can accommodate children up until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat and found steering it easy even with her 3 wheel stroller with seat year old in the seat.
Another great option is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, with a movable handlebar and a hood made of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It's also easy to get up and down kerbs and fit into small car boot. It can also be used as a pram, with baby car seat for infants and toddlers.
Fabric slings are placed within the frame and not on top as modular seats. This design provides a lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you should never overestimate the amount of times you'll have to do that as new parents!)
Seating
The seating capacity of 3 wheel buggy for sale wheelers is impressive and there are many different options to choose from. For a newborn it is possible to use the included carrycot (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lying flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can use the world-facing or parent facing seat that is large and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to recline fully, but they can be lowered down to the lowest point. This should still give your child plenty of room and headroom.
A fabric sling is also available. It's a benefit that it is positioned inside the frame, rather than on top as a modular seat. This means that it has a lower centre of gravity, with a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath loved the way this kind of seat negotiated these challenges.
This type of buggy has a large basket and other beneficial features such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal, and a few innovative lights for visibility that can be positioned in front of occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.
If you're looking for a buggy that can grow with your family, the sport(tm), a world-first, can accommodate the newborn, and later be modified to fit two or three children as they grow. All within a single footprint.
Stores
The 3-wheeled model is more sturdy and can be moved with just one hand. It's also ideal for terrains that are difficult to navigate. However, it also means that the shopping basket doesn't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.
A high-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It should be able to accommodate a carrycot or a car seat, which means you can use it from birth.
MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame can't fit through all the doors in their homes or small car boots - make sure you check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded prior to purchasing in case you're concerned about space.
It's worth looking for 3-wheelers that can accommodate 2 (or even 3!) This is the most suitable option for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is among the top of them that can be used as a single seat from day dot and then converts to a twin buggies when your baby begins walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres are designed to provide your child with more comfort while riding by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. They're commonly found on pushchairs such as the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an outstanding ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on the Phil & Ted's Sport made it easy for her to negotiate the kerbs as well as other obstacles.
They can be tricky to keep inflated and must be topped up frequently. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres so you'll need to ensure that you have repair kits, spare inner tube and pump handy when traveling with your buggy.
PU tyres can be seen on a lot more pushchairs than air-filled tyres, yet they're still as sturdy. You can identify PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide on smooth and tidy surfaces.
If you rub your hands over the tyres, then you can determine if they're rubber or PU. If it feels like it's moving, then it's a PU. You can also determine if your buggy is fitted with PU tyres by sliding them onto an even, smooth surface. They should roll easily and fit snugly into wheel hubs.
Foam tyres are often used in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain associated with this type of pushchair. This can make your buggy less stable because the foam will lose its springy quality. Also, these kinds of tyres can frequently be noisy, as they create lots of noise when you turn and navigate your way around town.
